TOUGH ENOUGH TO PROTECT
THE POWER GRID
MODULAR BALLISTIC PROTECTION MADE POSSIBLE
WITH COMPOSITES
THE CHALLENGE
Recent attacks on U.S. electrical substations across the
country provide stark reminders that our nation’s power
supply remains a primary target for criminals focused
on harming our country and security.1
The call to action is evident: we must continually
improve the physical and technological infrastructure
protection of our nation’s energy supply.
Avient and Southern States worked together to develop
a modular design using GlasArmor ballistic panels.
Using GlasArmor panels, Ballisti-Wall® and Ballisti-
Cover® solutions enable utility companies to add a
superior level of protection to critical components and
meet FERC security requirements within a modular,
adaptable construction.

Meet targeted cost-performance requirements – The
selected resin must offer significant savings over the
current LCP/carbon fiber formulation through material
and/or manufacturing savings, thus enabling penetration
of the low-cost computer market with a competitive
connector.
THE SOLUTION
Because they knew Avient could help, the connector
company’s design engineers invited Avient into the
development process.
In addition, Avient’s global presence supported
the manufacturer’s needs across the globe, saving time and
money while ensuring quality, consistency and reliability.

A 1:1 wall thickness will
produce sink and cause stress where the ribs
connect with the main wall.
For example,
this can be done by using inserts with thermal
expansion rates matched as closely as possible
to the polymer used to mold the boss.

Evaluating
a metal substitution involves two primary factors:
1) the difference in processing methodologies, and
2) the material capabilities.
Though the upfront
tooling costs can be high, the investment can yield a
life expectancy of 100,000 to over 1 million cycles.
HOW SUPPLIERS CAN HELP EVALUATE
MATERIAL TRANSITION
Successfully using composites goes beyond simply
swapping one material for another.

Manufacturers save time and labor by eliminating
the need for peel ply or other surface preparation
such as grinding or abrading, while achieving
superior adhesion compared to these typical
processes.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS
• Improves bonding performance of epoxy
adhesives in installation of pultruded parts
• Eliminates need for surface preparation with
abrasion or removal of peel ply layer prior to
application of adhesives
• Reduces overall system costs by saving time
and labor on secondary processes
• Enables replacement of mechanical fasteners
with epoxy adhesives for improved fatigue
performance and reduced weight
• Simplifies manufacturing processes and
reduces part complexity
