MATERIAL BREAKTHROUGH: VERSAFLEX™ CE BLUE JEAN STAIN RESISTANT
TPES FOR WHITE OR LIGHT-COLORED PHONE CASES
Phone case brands have struggled to design white or light-colored cases that do not stain when in contact
with blue jeans.

For brand owners
and OEMs to achieve this, they need materials free
of surface blooms and ready to stand up to everyday
wear and tear.
These new materials integrate excellent
aesthetics and functionality, including UV and
stain resistance, without sacrificing mechanical
properties.

Materials used for today’s medical devices, parts and pharmaceutical packaging contribute significantly to
performance and, in turn, to a patient’s health and well-being.
Consistency and reliability in those materials are
imperative for components designed to heal or even save lives.

THE SOLUTION
Leveraging decades of experience creating customized
composite materials for archery bow limbs and other
high-performance applications, the engineers at Avient
worked closely with WillowWood’s special products
team to identify a solution.
Beyond material selection, the collaborative team also
identified a proprietary design and finishing process
that could be achieved with the tooling already in place
at WillowWood’s Ohio-based manufacturing facility.
THE IMPACT
Finding a material that could enable just the right
amount of flexibility as well as necessary stability
was critical to meet the needs of WillowWood’s target
market.

This unique material is at
the heart of every product it makes.
THE SOLUTION
The team at Rolatube had a few non-negotiable
performance requirements when considering composite
material options for the tripod legs.
When deployed, the composite material
quickly unrolls to form rigid tubes that are strong,
stable, rugged, and weatherproof—providing the
ultimate user experience even in extreme conditions.

These high-performing materials deliver high-
temperature performance, mechanical integrity,
and excellent impact resistance for demanding
engine applications.
These robust materials also
incorporate heat stabilization to maintain tensile
strength and tensile elongation properties for long-
term thermal aging up to 120°C.

Density is measured in grams per cubic centimeters
(g/cc) with every 0.01 g/cc reduction resulting in less
material used.
A decrease in density of just 0.01–0.02 g/cc
can yield 4% annual savings in material consumption,
while generating a 4% increase in extruder productivity.
For example, in several instances processors ran Excelite
E-versions, which allowed longer production run times
and less material plate-out on extruder die lips.

Switching from this time-intensive material
may be an important opportunity to streamline
production as the industry struggles to keep up with
a steady increase in demand.
One
proven approach is to replace traditional vulcanized
rubber materials with thermoplastic elastomers,
better known as TPEs.
This advanced material provides cleanliness by avoiding cross-linking
agents used in curing vulcanized rubber.
