For starters, the insert was made from thermoset silicone rubber – a tried-and-true material that requires a slow-and-costly manufacturing process. The manufacturer needed an overhaul for the part – from a completely new base material to a more efficient manufacturing process.

The part – sourced from a sub-supplier – required secondary work by Mars Otomotiv, including removal of flash, drilling holes and surface treatment to prevent corrosion. Engineered polymers can be designed with specific thermal properties, possessing either excellent thermal conductivity or enabling efficient heat dissipation from the battery cells. Thermally conductive formulations can also be electrically isolative or conductive, combining thermal performance with protection from electrostatic discharge and electromagnetic interference, depending on the needs of the specific component. 

Wall thickness in the range from 0.060" to 0.120" will ensure good bonding in most overmolding applications. Prevent the TPE from flashing over areas on the substrate.
