The final solution was pre-colored to match the brand’s
existing color palette and eliminate the need for
secondary processing steps.

Although PVC is one option, this
manufacturer needed a colorable, drop-in replacement
for PC/ABS.
From there, the Avient team
identified material options that offered high flame
retardancy and finally, requirements for processing
flexibility and colorability were applied.
The results showed the
Avient material outperformed typical FR PC/ABS and
had an added bonus: a UL yellow card V0 flammability
rating for all colors and some thicknesses.* Avient
also used its custom color matching capabilities to
provide pre-colored material that simplified molding,
while the material’s wide processing window helped
accommodate a variety of molding environments.

Recently, many TPEs have been uniquely developed to bond to specific substrate
materials based on surface energy or polarity match between the elastomer and the thermoplastics.
Most of the new TPEs are designed based on the
concept of matching the surface energy between the TPEs and the substrates.
Figure 1 shows the surface
energy match of various thermoplastic elastomers with rigid thermoplastics.
