The wheel
forks utilize a long carbon fiber-reinforced nylon 6/6
composite, while the wheel hub comprises long carbon
fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane.
Avient
engineers also formulated the reinforced polyurethane
to chemically bond seamlessly with the urethane
used for the outer rolling surface of the wheel.

SELECTION GUIDE
NEUSoft™ Thermoplastic Polyurethanes
With continued advancement in healthcare
technology, the importance of quick prototyping and
material sampling has never been greater.
To support
these device needs, Avient developed the NEUSoft™
Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPUs) product line for
in-vivo applications in standard and customizable
grades.

For starters, the insert was made from thermoset silicone rubber – a tried-and-true material that requires a slow-and-costly manufacturing process.
Finally, the new TPE grades also boasted lower extractables because they required no crosslinking, unlike thermoset silicones.
Reduced freight costs: The lower specific gravity of TPEs versus thermoset silicone rubber cut the overall part weight by 20 percent.

HOW VERSAFLEX TPEs MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN PORTABLE SPEAKERS APPLICATIONS
GASKETS
Water and Dust Protection
- Tight housing seals with no leakage over time
Reduced Manufacturing Costs
- Eliminates sourcing and assembly steps required of
O-rings by overmolding directly onto the substrate;
strong adhesion to PC & ABS
- Faster cycle times than silicone or TPU
Design Freedom
- Injection molding TPEs in gaskets enables
complex designs in which simple O-rings would be
challenging to assemble
SPEAKER SKINS
Durable Look and Feel
- Silky feel soft touch
- Long lasting aesthetics with abrasion and UV
resistance
Reduced Manufacturing Costs
- Eliminates sourcing and assembly steps
required of silicone skins by overmolding
directly onto the substrate; strong
adhesion to PC & ABS
- Faster cycle times than silicone or TPU
Design Freedom
- Overmolding TPE removes the need for
mechanical interlocks and primers to get
silicone materials to adhere to substrates

Polymer composites can be thermoset or thermoplastic, so thermoset composites and thermoplastic composites are both types of polymer composites.
The main difference between a thermoset and thermoplastic is a thermoset cannot be reshaped after it’s formed, cured, and cooled while thermoplastics can be reheated and re-formed.
For example, thermoset composites have high temperature resistance and excellent fatigue resistance.

Thermoset vs Thermoplastic (What’s the difference?)
Thermoset materials are chemically cross-linked and cannot be reprocessed or recycled.
Common examples are epoxy, silicone, and polyurethane (PU).
