To produce a glossy finish, a polished mold is required and an unfilled grade should be used. A highly polished tool and a transparent material are required to produce a part with good clarity.  If a matte finish is required, a rougher mold texture should be used (or a GLS product such as GLS Versalloy™ TPV Alloys, which naturally produce a matte surface).

Drying is not typically required for GLS TPEs. Slower fill rates may be required if surface flow defects occur. This process is used when highly accurate molding tolerances are required.

For starters, the insert was made from thermoset silicone rubber – a tried-and-true material that requires a slow-and-costly manufacturing process. Extensive compatibility testing confirmed that the new grades would bond chemically with the engineering thermoplastic rigid substrate required in the device. Finally, the new TPE grades also boasted lower extractables because they required no crosslinking, unlike thermoset silicones.
