Detection and sorting of carbon black-filled plastic waste in material recovery facilities is a vexing issue for the packaging and recycling industries, because the equipment relies on the reflectance of near infrared (NIR) wavelengths.
Carbon black makes it impossible for the equipment to identify the waste, which must then be sent to landfill or incineration.
PolyOne’s new black colorants address this issue by eliminating carbon black and enabling black plastics to be sensed, sorted, and recycled efficiently.

The new super black range is powered by a specialized technology that makes a spectrum of black colors appear deeper and more intense, and is suitable for small denier fiber and microfiber.
Compared to traditional dyes, the new super black masterbatch colorants for PA and PET fibers are a more sustainable solution.
They enable a clean and water-free process for synthetic fiber coloration that does not create pollutants.

Due
to a lack of sorting and processing technology currently available, for example, most
recycled plastics are reprocessed and downcycled into lower-value materials like
carpet fibers; only 2% are recycled into products with a similar value to the original
product.

Latin America
Elsewhere, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission
for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), affirmed that promoting greater
incorporation of the circular economy will enable the region to move towards
a more sustainable, inclusive and low-carbon development pattern.

Predictions
Gartner predicts circular economies will replace linear economies in 10 years,
noting that supply chain leaders must adapt to circular models in order to
keep up in a marketplace with a growing emphasis on sustainability.

However,
when recycled bottles are not high enough quality to transform into new bottles or
packaging, rPET can be washed, heated, and stretched into fiber to create polyester yarn
and fabric.
It also has a lower carbon footprint than alternative packaging materials.
PET End Uses
Fiber—Fiber accounted for over 44% of
the global revenue share and is used for
clothing, athletic jerseys and accessories,
mattresses, cushions, car seating and
insulation products.
