CLEVELAND – October 18, 2021 – Avient Corporation today announced new Gravi-Tech™ density-modified thermoplastics that enable advanced metal plating surface treatments to deliver both the look and feel of metal in premium packaging applications.  In addition, these materials provide the design freedom and manufacturing ease of thermoplastics for use in applications such as luxury closures, caps, and boxes.  Injection-moldable Gravi-Tech can help designers achieve the evenly distributed weight, complex designs, and visual surface effects of metal without the extra costs and steps associated with die cast mold tooling or secondary assembly operations.

Styrene Block Copolymer (SBC) is a TPE that combine the processing characteristic of thermoplastics and physical properties of vulcanized rubbers. A smooth surface can be achieved by using processing aid or special surface coated die to reduce the high shear stress. SBC compound is thermoplastics and can be recycled, which results in additional saving in processing cost compared with thermset silicone.

This is possible because, unlike a pultrusion process where the resin is applied to the fiber before it enters the die, with CRTM the resin is injected directly into the die for better control of fiber alignment and resin kinetics.
